Chapter Ten

Jena

Jena slipped her hand into Al’s like she’d done as a little child. His hand seemed cold. She was sure his hands had been much warmer years ago. Unless it was that her hands had been a lot colder.

“I used to think about this. Watching the day end with you and Patrice.”

She’d stood between them, holding hands. Back when she’d thought the worst thing possible was the times when he’d be away for months. Only a handful of phone calls and emails to let her know he missed them too. Sorrow washed over her and she tried to recapture the initial joy. It was impossible. The moment wasn’t the same. And it wasn’t different because both her parents weren’t here beside her. No, it was something else that she couldn’t quite figure out.

The sun set and the darkness of the city was perforated by millions of lights. It didn’t help. No matter how much light, the darkness crept in and touched your life anyway. She unsuccessfully tried to push morbid thoughts away. Why was she letting them intrude on her time with her dad? She should be celebrating. “It’s getting cold.” She looked towards Al. “We should probably have dinner. I’m used to having it early because of the boys.”

Al lightly squeezed her hand before letting go. “It was nice to visit here again. That was a good suggestion.”

She walked with him to the car, nodding in answer. It hadn’t been a good suggestion. But she couldn’t figure out why. A celebratory meal would help recapture the mood. She waited for Al to unlock the car before getting in, turning up the heater once the car was started. Maybe that was it. Early winter was a stupid time for standing on top of lookouts. That was a summer activity. Feeling warmer and relieved she’d figured out what was wrong, she stared out the window. The streets were familiar, but she had no idea where he was taking her.

Al pulled up in front of a dark shop, pressed between two dilapidated buildings. “I don’t understand. This place was thriving when I was last here.”

She had no idea what to tell him. She’d never been to this restaurant and from the looks of things it had been years since the place had been open.

He hit the top of the steering wheel. “I wanted to take you somewhere special.”

“We could go to the pizza place Mum and Colin were going to take me and my brothers to last night. They make more than pizza.” When he continued to look disappointed, she tried again. “It’s a family restaurant.”

“It’s your favourite place?”

She wouldn’t go that far, but how could she say no when he had such a hopeful expression? “They make some of the best food I’ve ever tasted.”

“Okay. How do I get there?”

She directed him through the streets. When they pulled up, she was relieved to see the place wasn’t overly crowded. They headed for the front door, Al holding the door open for her to step inside the warm interior of the restaurant.
